Bibimbap is one of Korea’s most famous and beloved dishes, known for its vibrant colors, rich flavors, and balanced nutrition. The name “Bibimbap” means “mixed rice,” as it consists of a bowl of warm rice topped with various vegetables, marinated meat, a fried egg, and spicy gochujang sauce. This dish is not only delicious but also visually appealing, making it a perfect meal for any occasion.

Ingredients

For the rice:

  • 2 cups cooked short-grain rice

For the toppings:

  • 200 grams beef (thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 cup carrots (julienned)
  • 1/2 cup spinach
  • 1/2 cup bean sprouts
  • 1/2 cup zucchini (sliced into thin strips)
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms (shiitake or button, sliced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil (for stir-frying)
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (for garnish)

For the sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon water

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the toppings

  1. Marinate the beef – In a bowl, mix soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, and minced garlic. Add the beef, coat evenly, and let it marinate for 15 minutes.
  2. Cook the vegetables – Heat a small amount of vegetable oil in a pan. Stir-fry each vegetable separately with a pinch of salt. Cook carrots, zucchini, and mushrooms until tender. Blanch the spinach and bean sprouts in boiling water for 1 minute, then drain and season with sesame oil and salt.
  3. Cook the beef – In the same pan, stir-fry the marinated beef until fully cooked.

Step 2: Prepare the sauce

In a small bowl, mix gochujang, sesame oil, sugar, rice vinegar, and water. Stir until well combined.

Heat a pan with a little oil and fry the eggs until the whites are set but the yolks remain runny.

  1. Place the warm rice in a large bowl.
  2. Arrange the cooked vegetables, beef, and fried egg on top in separate sections for a colorful presentation.
  3. Drizzle with the prepared sauce and sprinkle sesame seeds on top.

Step 5: Mix and enjoy

Before eating, mix everything together thoroughly to blend the flavors. The combination of crispy vegetables, savory beef, spicy sauce, and soft rice creates an incredibly satisfying meal.
